Etching or sandblasting has a cool sophisticated elegance which is not subject to the changes of fashion affecting colored glass. Background etching (right) is an economical choice to provide privacy while diffusing bright sunlight. More complex effects can be achieved by skilful shading in techniques similar to air-brushing (see parrot, below right). For exceptional opulence, deep carving of thick glass produces a sculptural, 3-dimensional appearance which is especially intriguing when illuminated from the sides (see foliage with butterfies in 3/4" glass, below). Finally, particularly dramatic effects can be created by sandblasting on tinted, bronze or grey glass (left). created without unsightly re-enforcing bars. |
